In the waning days of this year's N.C. General Assembly session, students and faculty from Wake Technical Community College's Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs presented a curriculum demonstration that included free oral cancer and blood pressure checks.

NCCCFA Student Scholarship Winners, 2006-07

Again this year, three outstanding North Carolina community college students were winners of the 2005-06 NCCCFA Student Scholarships of $1,000 each.

Dianne Hudson & Maria Romero

The Eastern Region winner is Maria Romero, nominated by association member Dianne Hudson of Sampson Community College.

Maria Romero came to the United States from Mexico at age 11, and has become an American citizen, mastering the language and excelling in her academic pursuits. Her dream is to become a "great nurse." The wife and mother of two is in the nursing program at Sampson CC, where she is in the top 10% of her class. Her sponsor notes that Maria has demonstrated an eagerness to learn, leadership, and a spirit of caring and sincerity in all of her endeavors.  Maria was sponsored by association member Dianne Hudson of Sampson Community College.

The Central Region winner is Joseph Idada, nominated by association member Amy MacAdam of Durham Technical Community College.

Originally from Nigeria, Joseph Idada has been in the United States for about 18 months, but still supports his family back home. Although he has a business administration degree from Nigeria, he wishes to become a CPA, and plans to complete his work at Durham Technical CC by spring 2007. Joseph has a 4.0 average and according to his sponsor, has demonstrated leadership and service to his college and community.  Joseph was sponsored by association member Amy MacAdam of Durham Technical Community College.

The Western Region winner is Angela Kirk, nominated by association member Mary Kincaid of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute.

Angela Kirk, a mother of three, returned to school after being laid off from her job in a furniture factory following a downsizing. She has earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information Systems Technology, and will now pursue a second degree in Web Technologies. Her application stressed that Angela has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, as well as integrity and service to her college and community. Angela was sponsored by association member Mary Kincaid of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute.
